Fast laser surface texturing of spherical samples to improve the frictional performance of elasto-hydrodynamic lubricated contacts

چکیده

Abstract Textured surfaces offer the potential to promote friction and wear reduction by increasing hydrodynamic pressure, fluid uptake, or acting as oil debris reservoirs. However, texturing techniques often require additional manufacturing steps costs, thus frequently being not economically feasible for real engineering applications. This experimental study aims at applying a fast laser technique on curved obtaining superior tribological performances. A femtosecond pulsed (Ti:Sapphire) direct interference patterning (with solid-state Nd:YAG laser) were used dimple groove patterns steel (ball samples). Tribological tests carried out under elasto-hydrodynamic lubricated contact conditions varying slide-roll ratio using ball-on-disk configuration. Furthermore, specific interferometry rough was measure film thickness of smooth textured surfaces. Smooth samples obtain data reference surface. The results showed that dimples promoted (up 20%) compared specimens, whereas grooves generally caused less beneficial detrimental effects. In addition, formation full lubrication lower speeds. demonstrates how could potentially be improving performance bearings well other mechanical components utilised in several

Virtual Texturing: Modeling the Performance of Lubricated Contacts of Engineered Surfaces

Engineering practices and analyses have indicated that surface textures and topography may significantly affect the tribological performance of contact interfaces. Such an influence may be complicated and difficult to be captured with only a few statistic surface parameters. The need for further improvement of the performance and life of machine elements requires that surface topography and tex...

Starvation Effects in Elasto-hydrodynamically Lubricated Line Contacts

A lubricated contact suffers from starvation when the lubricant does not fill the contact inlet adequately. Such a situation arises due to short lubricant supply or at extremely high speeds. The starvation effect is modeled by shifting the position of the inlet meniscus towards the contact zone. The degree of starvation, so obtained, is plotted as a function of the position of inlet meniscus un...

About contacts of adhesive, elasto-plastic, frictional powders

Granular materials can be studied in a split-bottom ring shear cell geometry, where they show wide shear bands under slow, quasi-static, large deformation. The contact models are at the basis of their interesting collective behavior and flow-rheology as well the core ingredient for the discrete element method (DEM). The contact mechanics used involves elasto-plastic, viscous, frictional, and to...
